John Rhodes
mural Commission
Commissioned by the graphic design program at Sault College for the John Rhodes Community Centre, the chosen mural was intended to enhance the visual atmosphere of the ground floor and northern stairwell through a large-scale aquatic-themed vinyl piece. The purpose of the commission was to create a welcoming and engaging environment that reflected the spirit of the community while promoting physical and mental wellness for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
Design Decisions
The design decisions behind Sault Surge were heavily influenced by research into both the identity of Sault Ste. Marie and the role the John Rhodes Community Centre plays within the community. Initial research explored the city’s history, connection to water, and strong sense of community, while also examining how public recreational spaces contribute to physical wellness, mental health, education, and social connection. These findings helped establish the project’s core themes of water, activity, education, and community.

To reflect the centre’s aquatic environment and welcoming atmosphere, the final design emphasized movement, energy, and inclusivity through flowing compositions, vibrant colours, and large-scale visual storytelling. Inspiration was drawn from the pool’s existing mosaic tilework and surrounding colours, leading to the incorporation of layered textures, reflections, bubbles, and water movement throughout the mural.
Â
Colour choices were intentionally selected to create a bright and inviting environment while also representing community diversity and connection. The decision to focus on competitive swimmers and lifeguard culture stemmed from my research into the centre’s programs and the role aquatic activities play in building confidence, safety, teamwork, and personal growth within the community.

The final concept uses two swimmers as the central focus to create depth, motion, and visual clarity within the large public space. Inspired by the existing mosaic tilework throughout the pool area, the design incorporates layered textures, bubbles, light reflections, and flowing water movement to create a more immersive environment. Colour was used intentionally to connect the mural to the identity of Sault Ste. Marie, while also representing diversity and community inclusivity.Â
