swiss design
grinch poster

The objective of the Swiss-style Grinch poster project was to reinterpret a recognizable cinematic property through the principles of Swiss and International Typographic Design. The assignment focused on utilizing strong grid systems, hierarchy, alignment, and restrained graphic elements to create a visually engaging poster while maintaining the clean and structured aesthetic associated with Swiss design. Rather than relying heavily on decorative imagery, the project explored how typography, spacing, and composition alone could communicate tone, atmosphere, and visual impact.

Design Decisions

The design decisions throughout the poster focused heavily on structure, hierarchy, and intentional restraint. A 6-column by 12-row grid system was used to organize typography, imagery, and graphic elements in a way that maintained balance and visual rhythm throughout the composition. Inspired by traditional Swiss design principles, the layout emphasized asymmetrical balance, controlled spacing, and strong alignment systems to guide the viewer’s eye naturally throughout the poster.

Minimal graphic elements, such as black squares and simplified compositional shapes, were intentionally incorporated to reinforce the structured and editorial nature of the design while preventing unnecessary visual clutter. Typography hierarchy became a major focus throughout the project, requiring careful balance between the film title, body information, and actor names so that no element overpowered the overall composition. The project explored how expressive visual communication could still exist within a highly restrained and organized design system.

The final Swiss-style Grinch poster explored how minimalist editorial design principles can transform a recognizable film property into a modern and visually structured composition. Through the use of grid-based layouts, restrained graphic elements, and intentional typography hierarchy, the design emphasized clarity, movement, and balance while maintaining the recognizable tone of the source material.

The project demonstrates how Swiss design principles can create visually impactful communication through simplicity, structure, and hierarchy rather than excessive decoration. By relying on composition, spacing, and typographic organization, the final poster showcases how minimal design systems can still communicate strong personality and visual engagement within entertainment and promotional design.
